Issues with Reality

I have an issue with the Punk’s Universe that I am creating stories in for NaNoWriMo and it is to do with reality. So last years was based on a series that is going to end in plague and stuff but I have kind of put off finishing that section due to the Ebola stuff that is going on in the real world. Just a bit too close.

But then I’d come up with another novel idea which I had worked out the outline to and everything involving a subtle type of terrorism/sabotage within the space flight sector/agencies. However though I was considering just including the first unmanned one that exploded last week (especially as I actually had something on board or rather a test run of something via a kickstarter), there has since been another with Virgin and that one has resulted in loss of life.

I feel it is a bit unfair to use these issues for my stories at the moment even though the concepts were already there, but is that the right way to be thinking of it? They are topical, they are in my head, the Punk’s Universe is supposed to basically be our own and all the events within should at least appear to fit in with our history – up until modern day when they will diverge as I do not have the powers of prophecy.

If I am going to continue with this epic, widespread story/world then the stories will have to be written at some point as the over all story arcs kind of rely on the events happening. It is a tricky one as I am very aware that there are people out there suffering.

Wondering what other writers thought?
